What score would I need on the GRE to qualify for a good graduate program?

I would aim for at least a 650 on verbal, a 650 on qualitative, and a 5.5 on writing. They vary greatly by departments and schools, but this is a score which won't do you too much damage and should give you options. Keep in mind that 3.25 is a good GPA, but it isn't stellar, so you can definitely help yourself with high GREs. Want an example? According to the Educational Testing Service, which administers the GRE, the average score for those wishing to enter Ph.D. program in Political Science is 535 Verbal, 586 Qualitative. However, it is important to remember that: 1) these figures represent all people who take the GRE, not the accepted applicants. 2) That the figures for the schools you mention are surely much higher. You say you don't want to attend an "elitist" school, but the schools you mention are all top-notch graduate schools. Also, consider more people than ever are applying to graduate schools, particularly at public universities. Also, I know from experience, if funding is important you want a high GRE schools, as they are crucial in the selection of entering students for merit-based aid. So prepare for the GRE! Good luck!
