Uppham in 'Saving Private Ryan': do you detest him or sympathize with him?

I personally sympathize with him because I think that's what I would probably be like in that situation. But I don't know. Interestingly, in an interview, Spielberg was asked which of the characters he would probably be in real life. Without flinching, he said that he would be Upham.
