I would look at the small breeds and then after you decide which one is right for you, look for a rescue that caters to this specific breed. If you do not care if it is a purebreed the local shelter might have a smaller breed puppy for you. If you go to www.akc.org you can find rescues for every breed there. Just email someone from there and they will be more than happy to help you adopt a dog.
