Unfair or unappreciative boss? Or both?

My husband works very hard. His job is demanding physically and mentally. He is often asked to work his shift, and part of the second shift as well, because the second shift employee either didn't show up or will take a few days off. My husband did not have to do this, but he did anyway because he was trying to help them out because they were shorthanded. He was recently transferred to a different location with a different foreman. And due to the transfer his hours were cut drastically. My husband asked his supervisor for a raise to help compensate for the loss of hours. To which his supervisor replied, "If you can't make it on what you are making, you need to find another job." and walked off. It seems like to more you do for the big dogs the less they appreciate you. Agree?
